We are based in Ukhimath, which is 41 km from Kedarnath on the Guptkashi side. We have driven the Dehradun–Kedarnath road hundreds of times across every season since 2012. So when someone asks about the distance, we do not just give a number — we explain what that distance actually feels like, where it slows down, and what decisions it should drive for you. That is what this guide does.

What Is the Exact Dehradun to Kedarnath Distance by Road?
The confusion starts because people ask about "Kedarnath distance" without specifying which point they mean — the shrine itself, or the last road point. Your cab can only reach Sonprayag. From there, a government shuttle takes you to Gaurikund (5 km), and the 16 km trek to the shrine begins at Gaurikund. No private vehicle goes past Sonprayag. So the correct way to think about it:
| Route Leg | Distance | Mode | Approx Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dehradun → Rishikesh | 43 km | Road (NH7) | 1 hr – 1.5 hrs |
| Rishikesh → Devprayag | 72 km | NH7 (Ganga valley road) | 2 hrs |
| Devprayag → Rudraprayag | 69 km | NH7 (Alaknanda gorge) | 1.75 hrs |
| Rudraprayag → Guptkashi | 57 km | NH107 (mountain road) | 1.5 hrs |
| Guptkashi → Sonprayag | 30 km | State road (narrow) | 45 min – 1 hr |
| Total: Dehradun → Sonprayag | ~271 km | Road | ~9–10.5 hrs |
| Sonprayag → Gaurikund | 5 km | Shared shuttle jeep | 15–20 min |
| Gaurikund → Kedarnath Shrine (Trek) | 16 km | Trek (on foot / pony) | 5–7 hrs (up) |
| Grand Total: Dehradun → Kedarnath Shrine | ~292 km + 16 km trek | Road + Trek | Day 1 drive + Day 2 trek |
★ Times above assume no major traffic, clear weather, and a 6 AM start from Dehradun. In peak May–June and monsoon July–August, add 1–2 hours for the Rishikesh–Rudraprayag stretch and the Guptkashi–Sonprayag section. Always add buffer.
Something most guides skip: the 30 km from Guptkashi to Sonprayag is not a relaxed drive. In peak season, traffic builds up from early morning as hundreds of pilgrims converge on Sonprayag from all directions. We have seen this stretch take 2 hours instead of 45 minutes. If your plan is to reach Sonprayag early for the trek, you need to leave Guptkashi or Ukhimath before 5 AM — and that means your Dehradun departure should ideally be the day before.
That is why most experienced pilgrims — and everyone we have driven over the years — plan a two-day Dehradun-to-Kedarnath journey. Day 1: drive to Guptkashi or Sonprayag and rest. Day 2: enter the trek refreshed. For a complete picture of the full route, our Kedarnath travel guide covers everything from arrival to the shrine and back.
Dehradun to Kedarnath by Road — Key Towns & Distances at a Glance
The Dehradun–Kedarnath highway passes through some of the most significant religious and geographical points in Garhwal. Knowing these towns helps you plan halts, food stops, and fuel. Here is the route at a glance:
Shrine
Why Guptkashi Matters More Than You Think
Most Kedarnath guides treat Guptkashi as just a transit point. We know it differently — it is where we are based, 10 km from Ukhimath, and the actual nerve centre of the Kedarnath yatra. Every major service hub is here: hospital, banks with ATMs, petrol stations, hotels in all price ranges, and the famous Vishwanath temple where many pilgrims offer prayers before heading to Kedarnath.
If you are coming from Dehradun and plan to do the Kedarnath trek the next morning, Guptkashi is the ideal overnight halt. It sits at 1,319 m altitude — enough to begin gentle acclimatisation before the 3,583 m shrine — and is just 30 km from Sonprayag. You reach Guptkashi from Dehradun in roughly 8–9 hours, sleep, and tackle Sonprayag and the trek fresh the next day.
How Long Does It Take to Drive from Dehradun to Kedarnath?
The drive time from Dehradun to Sonprayag is what varies most — depending on your departure time, the season, and road conditions. Here are the realistic numbers:
A detail that matters: the stretch from Devprayag to Rudraprayag — 69 km — is where most of the driving time gets lost. The road hugs the Alaknanda river, has tight curves, and is frequently single-lane near construction zones. In 2026, BRO widening work continues near Srinagar Garhwal and Gauchar on NH7. Plan for slow movement here regardless of season.
Our standard advice to anyone calling us: leave Dehradun by 5:30–6 AM. This gives you the morning window before Rishikesh fills up and before the Rudraprayag–Guptkashi road gets congested. Arrive Guptkashi by 2–3 PM, rest, and be at Sonprayag by 6 AM the next morning for the trek. This two-day plan is not cautious — it is practical.
Dehradun Airport (Jolly Grant) to Kedarnath Distance
Jolly Grant Airport is 20 km from Rishikesh and 35 km from Dehradun city. If you are flying into Uttarakhand for the Kedarnath yatra, Jolly Grant is your entry point — and the distance calculation from the airport is slightly different from Dehradun city.
Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) to Kedarnath — Key Distances
| Jolly Grant → Rishikesh | ~20 km (30–35 min) |
| Jolly Grant → Devprayag | ~92 km (2.5 hrs) |
| Jolly Grant → Rudraprayag | ~161 km (4.5 hrs) |
| Jolly Grant → Guptkashi | ~218 km (6.5–7.5 hrs) |
| Jolly Grant → Sonprayag | ~248 km (8–9.5 hrs) |
| Jolly Grant → Gaurikund | ~253 km (8.5–10 hrs) |
| Gaurikund → Kedarnath (trek) | 16 km (5–7 hrs on foot) |
From Jolly Grant, you save roughly 20–25 km compared to starting from Dehradun city. More importantly, the airport route merges with the main yatra highway at Rishikesh — you do not lose time backtracking. We offer a dedicated Jolly Grant Airport to Char Dham cab service that starts the moment you exit arrivals. No waiting for a shared transfer, no coordination headache.
One practical tip for flyers: the early morning IndiGo and Air India flights from Delhi reach Jolly Grant around 7–8 AM. A cab departing by 8:30 AM from the airport puts you in Guptkashi by 4–5 PM — ideal for an overnight halt before the trek. This is the most efficient single-day transit from Delhi to the Kedarnath base for those who do not want to spend a night in Dehradun first.
Dehradun to Kedarnath Distance by Train — What You Actually Need to Know
There is no train to Kedarnath — the Himalayas do not permit railway lines this deep into Garhwal. But there are important train options to the nearest railheads. From those stations, you continue by road taxi.
From Dehradun station, book a direct cab to Sonprayag. It is approximately 271 km and takes 9–11 hours by road. No train connection reduces this significantly — the nearest rail-to-road switch is Dehradun itself or Haridwar.
Haridwar is the most popular railhead for Kedarnath pilgrims. The Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi from Delhi reach Haridwar in 4–4.5 hours. From Haridwar, the road to Sonprayag is ~215 km and takes 7–8.5 hours.
Rishikesh has a rail connection, but far fewer trains than Haridwar. Rishikesh station is also at the edge of town, 3–4 km from the main bus stand. Most pilgrims take a train to Haridwar and share a taxi to Rishikesh before continuing.
If you are coming from Delhi by train, our recommendation is the Nanda Devi Express or Mussoorie Express to Dehradun, arriving early morning, and then connecting immediately to a Dehradun-to-Kedarnath cab. Alternatively, travel to Haridwar on the Shatabdi, rest for a night, and take our Haridwar to Kedarnath taxi the next morning — that is a more common pattern and keeps the first driving day manageable.
For a full breakdown of the Haridwar starting route, including fares and pick-up points, read our Haridwar to Kedarnath taxi guide. You will also find the Sonprayag-specific breakdown in our Haridwar to Sonprayag taxi guide.
Dehradun to Kedarnath Distance by Helicopter — Routes, Helipads & Cost
The helicopter does not fly directly from Dehradun city to Kedarnath. The helipad at Sahastradhara, Dehradun, was used for trial flights but is not a regular commercial yatra helipad as of 2026. The main commercial helipads for Kedarnath are located along the road route itself:
🚁 Kedarnath Helipads — Distance from Dehradun by Road
8.5–10 hrs drive
Main helipad (most flights)
8.5–10.5 hrs drive
Good availability
8–9.5 hrs drive
Closest to our base
7–8.5 hrs drive
Less congested helipad
Helicopter flight time from any of these helipads to Kedarnath shrine: 6–10 minutes. Return ticket price in 2026 season: approximately ₹6,000–₹9,000 per person (government-regulated, prices vary by operator and season). The helicopter fare covers one way from helipad to shrine and return. You still need a road taxi to reach the helipad.
- Book helicopter slots on the official government portal — privately sold "helicopter packages" at inflated prices are common, avoid them
- Slots for May–June fill up weeks in advance. If you are planning a helicopter-only Kedarnath trip, book the helicopter before you book your taxi
- Weight limit is usually 80 kg per passenger including cabin bag. Confirm with your operator
Here is the practical picture: even if you fly to Kedarnath by helicopter, you need a road taxi from Dehradun to the helipad and back. So the Dehradun-to-helipad distance matters — and our Dehradun to Kedarnath cab service covers all four helipads as drop points. We will drive you to Phata, Sirsi, or Guptkashi helipad, wait during the helicopter trip, and bring you back. This is a common arrangement for elderly pilgrims who cannot do the 16 km trek.
Dehradun to Kedarnath Distance by Car — Which Route Should You Take?
There are two main road routes from Dehradun to the Kedarnath base. Both pass through Rishikesh, but they diverge after that point:
We use Route 1 for almost all our trips. It is not because Route 2 is bad — the Tehri Dam stretch is genuinely beautiful. But Route 1 has better road quality, more reliable fuel stops, and the NH7 is wider and faster on the Rishikesh–Rudraprayag section than the Chamba–Tehri road. In peak season, some drivers prefer Route 2 to avoid the Rishikesh town congestion, and that is a valid call — ask your driver on the day based on traffic reports.
Road Condition Reality — What the GPS Will Not Tell You
The stretch most people underestimate is between Rudraprayag and Guptkashi (57 km). This is a twisting mountain road along the Mandakini river. It has seen BRO improvement work over the last few years, but it still narrows in several places, and at certain points near Tilwara and Agastyamuni, one-way traffic management causes 20–40 minute waits during peak hours. Our drivers know exactly where these bottlenecks are and time the approach accordingly.
The Guptkashi to Sonprayag stretch (30 km) carries all pilgrims headed for Kedarnath into a single narrow road above the Mandakini gorge. In high season, this road gets chaotic from 7 AM onwards. The upward traffic (Sonprayag-bound) and downward traffic (returning pilgrims) use the same road with passing points. An experienced driver who knows these passing points and the right timing makes a material difference to your journey here.
If you are driving yourself — a private car from Dehradun — note that vehicles above a certain width are restricted on the Sonprayag approach. Check with the local police checkpost at Sitapur (about 10 km before Sonprayag) for current vehicle restrictions, as these are updated annually.

Cab waits at Sonprayag while you complete the trek.

Kedarnath to Dehradun Distance — Is the Return Route Any Different?
The return distance is the same — approximately 271 km from Sonprayag to Dehradun city. But the return journey has its own character that outbound travellers do not always anticipate.
After descending from Kedarnath, most pilgrims feel a combination of physical tiredness and emotional completion. The 16 km descent from Kedarnath to Gaurikund is hard on the knees, especially if you walked up the previous day. By the time you reach Sonprayag and get back in the car, many people just want to sleep. The 9–10 hour return drive to Dehradun on the same day is doable but tiring. Our suggestion: stay one more night at Guptkashi or even Rudraprayag after the descent and drive to Dehradun on Day 3. Your body will thank you.
The return drive also commonly involves stopping at Devprayag — the sacred sangam (confluence) of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, where the Ganga is officially born. It is right on NH7, easy to pull off for 20 minutes, and for pilgrims completing the yatra, it is a genuinely moving stop. We always suggest it and our passengers have never said they wished they skipped it.
Can I Return via a Different Route — Haridwar Instead of Dehradun?
Yes, and many pilgrims do this. Haridwar is about 55 km south of Dehradun via NH58. If you arrived at Dehradun but want to end at Haridwar (for an onward train to Delhi), we can arrange drop at Haridwar at the end of your trip. The Sonprayag–Haridwar distance is approximately 215 km, which is actually shorter than the Dehradun return. This is a common request — especially for pilgrims from Delhi who want to end with the Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti and then catch an evening train home.
Key Checkposts & Registration Points Between Dehradun and Kedarnath
Your cab driver knows all these checkposts and will park the vehicle at Sonprayag as instructed. He will then wait at Sonprayag while you complete the trek and helicopter/return. This is standard practice — your luggage stays locked in the car, and the driver is reachable by phone (BSNL network is most reliable here).
Best Time to Travel from Dehradun to Kedarnath
Kedarnath opens in late April or early May (the exact date is announced annually by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee after calculating the muhurrat) and closes on Bhai Dooj — the day after Diwali, typically in late October or early November. Within this window, the experience on the road and the shrine varies significantly:
May (2nd Half) – June
Maximum crowd but clear roads. Shrine newly open. Best for those who want full pilgrim atmosphere and certain weather. Book taxi 2–3 months in advance.
September – Mid October
Post-monsoon. Roads clear, skies sharp, crowd reduced significantly. Our personal favourite for driving — the valley looks spectacular and the drive is least stressful.
July – August
Monsoon. Road delays due to landslides. Not recommended for first-timers, elderly, or those on fixed dates. Build 2 buffer days if you travel this period.
November – April
Shrine is closed. Roads above Guptkashi are snow-covered and impassable. No yatra is possible. The deity is moved to Ukhimath (our town) for the winter months.
A detail most guides miss: during the winter months, the Kedarnath deity is brought to Ukhimath — our town, 41 km from the shrine — and worshipped here until the shrine reopens. If you visit Ukhimath in winter, you can still have darshan of the Kedarnath deity at the Omkar Mahadev temple in Ukhimath. Many pilgrims who cannot make the high-altitude trek specifically plan this winter visit. We are happy to share more on this if you are interested.
