The road distance from Kedarnath (Sonprayag base) to Badrinath is approximately 240 km, and the drive takes 8–10 hours depending on traffic, road conditions, and seasonal delays. There is no shortcut — this is mountain terrain, and the journey deserves as much planning as the shrines themselves.

We've been driving pilgrims on this route since 2012. Here's what the road actually looks like — and what nobody tells you before you book.

~240 km Road Distance (Sonprayag → Badrinath)
8–10 hrs Travel Time by Taxi

3,133 m Badrinath Altitude

How Far Is Kedarnath from Badrinath by Road?

The distance between Kedarnath and Badrinath by road is around 240 km, measured from Sonprayag — the last point vehicles can reach before the Kedarnath trek. The route passes through Rudraprayag, Gauchar, Chamoli, and Joshimath before climbing up to Badrinath at 3,133 m altitude.

As the crow flies, the two shrines are only about 40 km apart — but the Himalayas don't work that way. The road winds through three river valleys and several high passes, which is why the actual driving distance is six times longer.

What Is the Best Route from Kedarnath to Badrinath?

The only reliable route is: Sonprayag → Rudraprayag → Karanprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath → Badrinath, all along NH-7 following the Alaknanda River. There is no alternate paved highway — the road hugs the river for most of the journey.

Some drivers suggest a Gopeshwar shortcut. It saves maybe 15 km, but the road above Gopeshwar is often in poor condition, especially during monsoon (June–August). We stick to the NH-7 alignment for reliability and your comfort.

📍 Local Tip from Ukhimath If you're doing the full Char Dham Yatra, this Kedarnath-to-Badrinath leg is typically Day 5 or 6 depending on your Char Dham itinerary. Plan an early 6:00 AM departure from Sonprayag to clear Joshimath before afternoon traffic.

Kedarnath to Badrinath Distance by Road — How Long Does It Take?

Under good conditions in May or early June, the drive takes 8 to 9 hours with short stops. In July–August (monsoon), budget 10 to 12 hours — landslides, single-lane traffic, and BRO repair work can add 2 hours on any given day.

One thing most blogs won't tell you: the Joshimath–Badrinath stretch (46 km) often takes 90 minutes even though it looks short on a map. The road above Vishnuprayag is narrow, and vehicles from the previous day's delays tend to bunch at the Lambagad checkpoint in the morning.

⚠️ Timing matters: We always advise departing Sonprayag no later than 6:00 AM to clear Joshimath before the afternoon rush — and reach Badrinath in time for evening aarti at 6:00 PM.
