Delhi to Uttarakhand Distance – Routes, Time & Travel Tips

Delhi to Uttarakhand distance starts at around 250 km for the closest destinations like Haridwar and Rishikesh, and stretches beyond 500 km for high-altitude shrines and trekking bases.

The route you take — and how long it takes — depends entirely on where in Uttarakhand you're headed. We've been operating cabs out of Ukhimath since 2012, and the most common question we get from first-timers is: "How far is it, really?" This guide answers that with actual distances, honest road conditions, and practical travel advice — not the kind of generic numbers you'll find copy-pasted across a hundred travel blogs.

How Far Is Delhi from Uttarakhand's Most-Visited Destinations?

Uttarakhand is a large state. The Himalayan terrain means that even a 300-km journey can take 8–10 hours. Here's a destination-wise breakdown of the Delhi to Uttarakhand distance that actually matters for planning:

Destination Distance from Delhi Approx. Drive Time
Haridwar~250 km5–6 hours
Rishikesh~260 km5.5–6.5 hours
Dehradun~280 km6–7 hours
Mussoorie~295 km6.5–7 hours
Nainital~310 km7–8 hours
Kedarnath (base: Gaurikund)~450 km10–12 hours
Badrinath~495 km12–14 hours
Auli~490 km12–13 hours
Hemkund Sahib (base: Govindghat)~500 km12–14 hours
Neem Karoli Baba Ashram (Kainchi Dham)~320 km7–8 hours

These are road distances via NH58 and NH7, the primary Delhi–Uttarakhand highway corridors. Mountain roads beyond Rishikesh or Kathgodam follow river valleys — they're narrower, slower, and prone to delays during monsoon (July–September).

Which Route Do Most Travellers Take from Delhi?

Via NH58 — Delhi–Haridwar–Rishikesh–Char Dham Corridor

This is the busiest and most well-maintained route for pilgrims. It connects Delhi to Haridwar in about 5–6 hours and continues up toward Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri. Most Char Dham Yatra groups travel this way.

Via NH9 — Delhi–Moradabad–Kathgodam Corridor

This route leads to Kumaon — Nainital, Almora, Kainchi Dham (Neem Karoli Baba Ashram), and Munsiyari. Kathgodam is the nearest railhead for this belt, about 300 km from Delhi. See our guide on Kathgodam to Nainital distance for the onward leg.

Delhi to Auli Uttarakhand Distance

The Delhi to Auli Uttarakhand distance is approximately 490 km by road. You drive via Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath, and then take a ropeway or jeep up to Auli (at 2,519 m). The full drive takes 12–13 hours in good conditions — plan for an overnight halt at Rishikesh or Rudraprayag if you're not an experienced mountain driver.

Delhi to Hemkund Sahib Uttarakhand Distance

Delhi to Hemkund Sahib Uttarakhand distance by road is around 500 km to Govindghat, the last motorable point. From Govindghat, it's a 21-km trek (or pony/helicopter) to Hemkund Sahib at 4,329 m — one of the highest Gurudwaras in the world. Most yatris drive Delhi → Haridwar → Joshimath → Govindghat and then trek the following morning. Allow 13–15 hours for the road journey alone.

Delhi to Neem Karoli Baba Uttarakhand Distance

The Delhi to Neem Karoli Baba Uttarakhand distance — specifically to Kainchi Dham near Bhowali — is about 320 km via Moradabad and Kathgodam. The drive takes 7–8 hours. Kainchi Dham sits at a quiet bend in the river, roughly 17 km from Nainital town. It's a popular spiritual stop that doesn't get the same highway footprint as Haridwar, but draws a steady stream of devotees year-round.

Delhi to Kedarnath Distance — The Most Asked Route

Delhi to Kedarnath distance is around 450 km by road to Gaurikund, the trek base. From there, it's a 16-km trek (or pony/helicopter) up to the shrine at 3,583 m. We operate cabs from Delhi all the way to Gaurikund — and we're based in Ukhimath, just 41 km from Kedarnath, so we know exactly what's happening on that road on any given day.

The drive from Delhi to Gaurikund via Rishikesh–Rudraprayag takes 10–12 hours under normal conditions. During Yatra season (May–June, September–October), expect an extra 1–2 hours due to traffic at Rudraprayag and Sitapur checkpoints. Check our Haridwar to Kedarnath taxi guide if you're boarding from Haridwar instead.

What Nobody Tells You About the Delhi–Uttarakhand Road

Mountain roads beyond Rishikesh (Garhwal side) and Kathgodam (Kumaon side) are single-lane stretches with heavy Yatra traffic from April to June. A few things first-timers consistently underestimate:

  • Night driving after Devprayag is not advisable. The road narrows significantly past the sangam, and landslide debris can be unpredictable.
  • Fuel up before Rudraprayag. Petrol pumps thin out considerably after this point toward Kedarnath and Badrinath.
  • The last 30 km always takes longer than you think. Whether it's Gaurikund, Govindghat, or Joshimath — mountain gradients and hairpin bends make GPS ETAs unreliable.
  • Phone signals drop after Tilwara on the Kedarnath route. Download offline maps before leaving Rishikesh.
